A key part of SCAMP ambition is to support the local economy, both new start-ups but also existing businesses. Within the ‘Coastal Woodlands’ strand of SCAMP, Dumfries & Galloway Woodlands (DGW) is exploring how our woodlands can provide products and an opportunity for skills that would deliver economic benefit locally.
The Solway Coast & Marine Landscape Connections project (SCAMP) is an opportunity to deliver projects across Dumfries & Galloway’s coastal woodlands, and is currently in its development phase. SCAMP is an initiative led by Dumfries & Galloway Council’s Environment Team, supported by a range of partners across the region and with key funding from The National lottery Heritage Fund’s Landscape Connections Scheme. This is a very broad topic, covering everything from artisans obtaining raw materials from woodlands, through to activities and contemporary woodland experiences.
DGW has contracted Jim Buchanan to explore this sector further, and a number of project ideas are coming together – from support to heritage skills that are at risk of going extinct, through to trials of new technology that are in use elsewhere and could be introduced to the region.
In addition to the emerging project ideas, it is important the everyone has the opportunity to input their experience and opportunities they have identified. We would welcome your thoughts on how skills in and products from our Coastal Woodlands can be better capitalised upon locally.
