Solstice Celebration for Members

A fantastic first ever members’ event was held on 21st June 2025 at Bennel Wood.

D&G Woodlands were excited to host their first ever members’ event at the Bennel Woodland Laboratory, just outside Dalbeattie. Around 35 members attended the ‘Solstice Celebration’, travelling in from all corners of the region including from Stranraer, Glentrool, Lockerbie and Moffat. The morning visit, which ran from 10am-12pm, opened with a talk from D&G Woodlands Manager, McNabb Laurie. A short walk uphill followed, with a stop to take in the views.

Phil Dowling, D&G Woodlands ACTION Officer, then gave a brief presentation on the bird life found so far at Bennel Wood. Jack Barton, from Species on the Edge, went on to offer his insights into the bats that might be found on site at Bennel. Wider discussion was had, including about the baseline surveys currently being undertaken at the ‘Woodland Laboratory’, as well as the possibilities and ambitions for the future.

Members then enjoyed cake and refreshments while getting to know the D&G Woodlands team and their fellow members. Hopefully lifelong friendships were forged! A suggestion box was available for members to offer any feedback or ideas for D&G Woodlands to take onboard. After everyone had been suitably refreshed, a second walk was undertaken by some, to the summit of Bennel Wood.

Feedback received was wide-ranging, with comments including ‘brilliant event’, ‘enjoyed the visit’, and ‘will be back soon’ rubbing shoulders with suggestions such as ‘wood-fired sauna at the viewpoint’!

D&G Woodlands hope this will be the first of many members’ events, so do sign up if you’ve not already joined. Membership is free and includes early access to events throughout the year – sign up here.

Thank you to all members that attended the Solstice Celebration; D&G Woodlands look forward to seeing you all again soon!
